7 Key Steps To Take When Your Basement Floods From Rain Water

Updated: Feb 27

What to do when your basement floods

1. Check for potential safety hazards, then proceed with caution. ( For additional info regarding your safety. Click Here)

2. Walk through the areas and try to determine where the most amount of water appears to be coming from. This will help you narrow down the source of the water.

3. If you have a sump pump, check to see if it's on and working.

  • If it's working, it may not be able to keep up or a crack in the drain pipe would cause it to not pump out efficiently.

  • If it’s not working, check to see if the pump has power or possibly the float on the inside may be stuck and not allow the pump to turn on automatically. To learn more, please click here.

  • If all else fails, then you most likely need to call a plumber to properly diagnose and fix it.

4. Once you have a good idea of where the water may be coming from due to the heavy rain, use your best judgment to keep yourself safe and collect personal or valuable items first.

5. Use as many towels as you need or something absorbent to barricade the affected areas from the non-affected areas, to prevent further damage.

6. This would now be a good time to reach out to a mitigation company and/or a plumber. The plumber may be able to diagnose/fix the source, if you think it's plumbing related. Then the water mitigation company will assess all the damages from the water and help you pump out what's left. They may also fill you in on how the process would work through the insurance side of things.

7. Determine how the water entered the home. Depending on if something failed, like your sump pump or maybe a clogged drain. You may be covered under your homeowners insurance, (the mitigation company will assist with this). However, if it is just rain water from the outside coming in. That will be viewed as flood damage, and not all policies cover this.
